My name is kate i'm 30 I contracted NF in august 2011 I got the bug in my left hand. I wasn't aware of this flesh eating bug i didn't seek medical attention till 3 days later, after my hand started to swell rapidly and started burning and got flu like symptoms. I went to the hospital at 6:45am by this time it started to spread up my arm, At first they said I had a liver failure they started me on a drip containing antibiotics they said i would need a small operation at 19:00 as i had an infection they needed to clean. I woke up 3 days later in ICCU (intensive critical care unit) i am one of the lucky ones as the surgeons managed to save my left arm. i spent 3 weeks in hospital, in total i had 8 operations i was discharged from hospital on the 13th september. i still need to have further surgery and continuous physio therapy to try and regain the feeling and use of my arm and hand. it is a awful thing to have to live with my physical scares will heal in time its the mental ones that don't. i just thank my lucky stars every day that i am alive i intend to live my life and not let it beat me. I would like to say a massive thank you to all the doctors and nurses both and sunderland royal hospital and Durham university hospital for there dedication and hard work especially to the 2 surgeons DR green and DR Ali Kharn who managed to save my arm. i would also like to say a massive thank you to all my family, friends and my 3 wonderful children who have helped me through this traumatic ordeal.
