JoAnn Delano

Hi, My name is JoAnn Delano and I am a survivor of necrotizing fasciitis. On Friday, March 9th 2012, I was feeling ill, I had a bad head cold. On Saturday March 10th I was running a fever of 102.8. Of course it being the weekend, and wanting to save that dollar, I waited until Monday when the doctors office was open to go to the Dr.. Saturday evening I noticed a lump that felt like a boil on my vaginal lip. It had a leak and when I went to the bathroom, it had a very fowl odor. Monday I went to see the doctor and they put me in the hospital right away. By this time the disease was already in my upper left leg and also traveling across my stomach. Tuesday morning they took me to surgery and cut me open and started to remove the disease. They kept me in a drug induced coma for four days. Each day taking me back into surgery to remove more infection. On Saturday they took be back to surgery to make sure all infection was gone and applied a wound vac to help heal the wound from the inside out. I was in the hospital for 11 days and then in a nursing home for 12 days for rehabilitation. I was extremely, very very lucky, I didn't lose any of my limbs. The doctors didn't know if they were going to be able to save my left leg, but they did. I also am healing way faster than the doctors expected. They said it would be 6 to 8 months before I would be fully healed and not to expect to go back to work for the rest of the year. I had the wound vac until May 7th and am now doing daily dressings. I am able to go back to work on July 9th. Before I had this, I never heard of it. Now after reading up on it, I have to say I am one of the luckiest girls in the world to be alive and have all my limbs. I am so grateful to my doctors, nurses and my family and friends for helping me get through this.
