I'm a 24 year old male who is a paraplegic, and recently I had a greatly swollen scrotum so I rushed to my family doctor. He said I had adema of the scrotum and since it was such a mild case he sent me on my way. A few hours later I went to another appointment for an unrelated matter, and that's when the doctor noticed that I had something terribly wrong. It seems that in just a few hours I had developed a black hole about the size of a quarter! The doctor was a radiologist and was not familiar with Necrotizing Fasciitis and he said that I had an advanced pressure sore on my groin area. I knew this was not so, but on further examination by myself I did find that in the crease of my right leg there was a large puss filled hole. I called my family doctor, but since I had no previous symptoms, and I had just seen him he informed me that if there was something wrong to go to the emergency room. I went in to the emergency room later that day and I've found that since my car wreck (which is where I got the spinal cord injury) a lot of doctors don't know much about my condition but I never would have imagined they'd be wrong about this too! The doctor at the hospital sent me home, but in his defense I must say that despite the large puss filled hole I felt fine! It wasn't until later the next day that I began to hallucinate, and I finally saw my family Doc. who sent me on my way to Charlotte, NC, to a bigger hospital. I owe my life to my family doctor, because the team of surgeons who saw me at CMC were very alarmed and I was in surgery within 2 hours of arriving at the emergency room doors. If it wasn't bad enough that I had N.F. and that I was dying, but the day in question was my 24th birthday! After all was said and done, I was left with a large gash on my inner thigh that was about 1 foot long and 4" deep. They hooked me to a wound vac to heal the large gash and when it get's healed enough I will have plastic surgery to close it and hopefully put all this hell behind me!
