Michele McLaren

My name is Michele Mclaren and I am a survivor of necrotizing fasciitis. It all began on March 8th, 2005. I was taking a shower on the evening of the 8th when I noticed a sharp burning sensation on the lower part of my right leg. I shrugged it off thinking maybe I may have bumped it somewhere. By the next morning, while I was getting ready for work, I could not stand on my right leg and there were small red bumps on my skin. I went to the doctor first and was told that I probably had some sort of a spider bite and that I would probably be fine in a few days. The bumps ended up all over my lower leg, along with the skin that was very hot to the touch. So my mother and I went to the emergency room. By the time I got there, I was shivering and extrememly cold. I had a fever of 104. And within a few hours, I was diagnosed with a flesh- eating bacteria. I had no knowledge of this disease, but all I knew was that I was in an extreme amount of pain. Because I am a diabetic, they wanted to operate pretty quickly, because they were afraid that I would lose my leg. I went through the surgery and lost a considerable amount of muscle on my leg from the bacteria eating it out. Once the surgery was over, I could literally see the bone on the inside of my leg. What was done was that my muscle was sown together to close the opening left on my leg, and I remained in the hospital for a month. It was, I have to say, the hardest time for me in my life. I had just moved, and hardly knew anyone. I was confused, and scared. But it has been a year+ since the encounter and everyday that I wake up, I thank God. While I was in the hospital, and had alot of time to think, one of my favorite scriptures that I would read over and over was: "But those who hope on the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:31 I always prayed to be strong. But I guess what is the most important strength to have is God's strength.
